Preparing for Climb and Etiquette

  • Proper use of climbing verbal commands is expected at all times. “On belay?” “Belay on!” “Climbing?” “Climb on!”
  • Wear comfortable clothing.  Closed-toe shoes are required.
  • Jewelry, especially rings and watches, should be removed before climbing.  Long hair should be tied back.
  • Please avoid stepping on the ropes.
  • All climbers must use a belayer-check-climber and climber-check-belayer system before every climb. Check each other’s harness, knot, belay device and anchor.
  • Climbers should never climb faster than the belayer can keep the rope secure and take up slack. The belayer will let them know if they need to slow down.
  • Please stay in line, on route and avoid crossing other ropes. Climbers should never climb directly above or below others on the wall.
  • If at any time a belayer deems it unsafe or unwise for a climber to continue, they may require a climber to discontinue climbing and return to the ground.
  • Ask for assistance when needed.
  • Report damage or equipment misuse to the Five Pines Staff.
